This is a Temporary Page - November 2008 - March 2009

FORMATION

The IANGU was formed in June, 2007 by a core group of tertiary education institutions that saw value in developing an international association to encourage and facilitate collaboration between new generation universities around the world.

IANGU PURPOSES

The purposes of the association are to facilitate collaboration between, and concerted action by, tertiary education institutions around the world that share and/or respect the commitments made by new generation universities to:

  • fostering access and equity;
  • maintaining close relationships with their communities;
  • undertaking a transformational role within those communities;
  • delivering a broad spectrum of programmes with a professional and vocational focus
  • delivering teaching of the highest quality informed by research and scholarship
  • meeting the needs of emerging professions, disciplines and fields of study; and
  • preparing students for the world of work

IANGU OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the association are to facilitate collaboration between the member institutions, all of which demonstrate the characteristics of new generation universities, and to address issues of mutual interest and concern. The objectives of the association include but are not limited to:

  • enhancing the legitimacy of new generation universities
  • supporting institutions and governments in addressing tertiary education needs
  • sharing good practice in fostering strong industry and community relationships
  • helping members to recognize and deal effectively with ethnic and cultural diversity
  • developing and promoting public policy initiatives at national and international level
  • seeking to influence international conversations between national policy-makers
  • publishing papers and case studies relevant to new generation universities
  • working internationally with multi-national companies and organizations
  • collaborating in organizing lectures, conferences and seminars
  • encouraging sound institutional governance and management
  • facilitating staff and student exchange programmes
  • enhancing development opportunities for staff and board members
  • encouraging the development of conjoint and double degree programmes
  • supporting programmes and projects that enhance teaching and learning
  • facilitating collaborative research programmes and projects

MEMBER INSTITUTIONS

While there is considerable diversity amongst those institutions that would generally be considered to be new generation universities, they share and/or respect some defining characteristics. For example, they are typically embedded in, draw strength from, and aspire to take a transformational role within identifiable communities of interest. They normally deliver a broad spectrum of academic programmes and services, with a professional and vocational focus, emphasizing teaching of the highest possible quality, informed by research and scholarship. They have a strong commitment to access and equity, meeting the needs of emerging professions, disciplines and fields of study, and preparing students for the world of work, as employees or employers. Through various combinations of these characteristics, they aim to blend the characteristics of teaching-led and research-led institutions, and thus to establish a new kind of university. By their very nature, they support and celebrate diversity.

POTENTIAL MEMBERS

The association is intended to be open and inclusive. In determining applications for membership, members will have regard to the extent to which the institution in question complies with the definition of a university as an organization authorized to award advanced degrees in three or more academic disciplines or fields of study [where the term advanced degree implies an award that relies upon and extends the knowledge and skills gained in completing a bachelor degree programme] and otherwise demonstrates the characteristics of a new generation university. In most cases, the applicant will be recognized as a university or a university-level institution by a competent national or international body, or will have a sustained public commitment to achieving, such recognition.

ESTABLISHMENT

The association was established when fourteen foundation institutions signed an Agreement to proceed in Dublin, Ireland on June 27, 2007. The association is an unincorporated society, which essentially depends on the willingness of each member, from time to time, to undertake activities on behalf of the association. Provision has been made in the Constitution for a modest annual subscription to be assessed to cover the normal costs of operation the association in accordance with the wishes of the members. The association may, from time to time, solicit assistance from, and offer assistance to, appropriate international agencies and organizations. Provision has been made in the Constitution for a voluntary levy to be raised, from time to time, to support specific projects and programmes. In the longer term, to provide continuity, and to enable the association to enter contracts, own assets, and limit the liability carried by individual institutions, consideration may be given to registering the association as an incorporated society in a country within which a significant number of members have their principal places of business. The Constitution has therefore been prepared in a format that could readily be used as a basis for incorporation in most countries.
